In July Midways and Getaways took a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. This was not our first trip- we have been several times. Walt Disney World is a popular resort with many, many blogs that are solely dedicated to this park. The purpose of today’s blog is not to recommend a Disney vacation (although we do recommend it), but to talk about one of the many choices that you have for accommodations once you have decided to visit the mouse. How on earth do you decide where to stay?
The first choice that you will have to make is whether to stay on or off property. If you DO choose to stay on property there are a lot of resorts to choose from ranging from budget, to moderate, and deluxe. We have stayed at resorts in all three of these price ranges and enjoyed them all. However, when our budget allows we prefer to go deluxe as these resorts offer some “extras” that we really enjoy. For this visit we decided to try The Contemporary Resort. Read on for three reasons why the Contemporary might be a great choice for your next Disney vacation…
Our room in the Garden Wing reminded us of several hotels that we have stayed at in New York City with one important difference- it is MUCH BIGGER. Despite there being two beds there was ample space to walk around and we could have easily fit a pack and play or portable crib if we had needed to. Additionally the couch in the photo below opens for additional sleeping space. A family of five would fit comfortably in this room. The bathroom was spacious as well.
2. The “Quiet” Pool
Like all resorts on property, the Contemporary has a good sized family pool. However, the property also has a “Quiet Pool” which is open 24 hours a day. Since we often returned to the hotel after 11 pm when the main pool was closed, this gave us the option to relax and refresh at later hours. This pool was also a great asset during the day because of the exceptional view of Bay Lake (see below). During the day time hours, a cast member came around to offer us a cool towel for our faces as we were relaxing in the pool. Aside from the stunning view the lake also offers the opportunity for water activities which can be accessed from the dock behind the hotel.
This is the big one! Guests at the Contemporary have about a 15 minute walk to the Magic Kingdom. If you plan to spend a lot of time in that park this is a great hotel choice, as it is the only property in walking distance. The monorail runs right through the hotel making EPCOT easily accessible as well. We found bus service to the other parks to be excellent, but quick access to MK was the main reason that we loved this hotel.
Bottom Line: The Contemporary does not boast exotic theming like some of Disney’s other hotels (think Animal Kingdom Lodge), but there are a lot of pros to staying here. In addition to our “big three” there are also three table service restaurants, including Chef Mickey’s which offers character dining. It is also one of the original hotels at Walt Disney World which makes it worth checking out especially if you are interested in the history of WDW (or if you are into modern architecture). Like most of the properties at WDW, the Contemporary is definitely worth checking out.
